SEPT 2ND, 5-6:30pm ET | KEL Open Dialogue: Unpacking Allyship – A University Student Perspective

On Wednesday, September 2nd, Justin Rhoden of the Knowledge Equity Lab will host an Open Dialogue from 5:00-6:30PM ET on Unpacking Allyship: A University Student Perspective, based on his piece Creation and Indigenous Education: Shifting our learning from deficit to coexistence, published in the Ipperwash Summer Series on AnishinaabekNews.ca.

Without providing students with the appropriate holistic context, university curriculums instill inappropriate, ahistorical, and deficit perceptions of Indigenous Peoples.

…Like myself, many students attend universities across Canada. In these spaces, our education will collectively shape the solidarity non-Indigenous communities’ practice with Indigenous communities. As institutions, there is a profound opportunity to nurture and sustain this solidarity through holistic education, rooted in genuine engagement with Indigenous People.

There is also a pervasive opportunity to hinder this form of solidarity by limiting students’ understanding of Indigenous Peoples through their education. The latter, whether intentional or not, is violent and a threat to the solidarity we need. University curriculums must be designed carefully and purposefully to reflect the holistic context of Indigenous Peoples and our coexistent relationships.

This live event will spotlight Justin’s thoughtful reflections on allyship, paired with this Ally Bill of Responsibilities by Dr. Lynn Gehl, Algonquin Anishinaabe-kwe. Following this, all participants will be invited to an open dialogue to share their thoughts and reflections on allyship, solidarity, and other emerging themes.

This is a pre-launch event in preparation for the Knowledge Equity Lab’s formal launch on September 24th, 2020 (save the date!) These events seek to highlight various projects and people within the KEL network, seeking to advance shared goals of knowledge equity, epistemic diversity, knowledge inclusion, and the centering of underrepresented knowledge as a means of social justice and change.
